Romance is a popular genre in the anime sphere, and one of its most well-known subgenres is harem, where a singular protagonist is bombarded by the affections of multiple love interests. While most harem protagonists are male, there are some occasions where the protagonist of a harem anime is actually female.

College student Hayato Kusakabe lost his parents and was raised by his grandmother Sachiko, but fought with her before leaving to study in Tokyo. He returns to his grandmother’s café following her death, planning to shut it down, but is opposed by the five girls currently living and working at the café as waitresses, who want to keep it open for Sachiko’s sake. After some arguing, Hayato decides to keep the café open and manage it himself but tells the girls that if the café isn’t profitable in a year, he’ll close it down.
The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses is a standard rom-com anime where the main relationship between the protagonist and the various heroines starts quite badly. While the anime shows their relationship growing better over time, the shenanigans that happen on the way there are hilarious. Season 2 is generally superior to its predecessor, but they are both enjoyable.

Many of the best comedy harem anime divide their time relatively evenly between humor and drama, to the point that fans of the former might grow frustrated when the latter becomes the focus in the second half of a season. Consequently, TenPuru‘s decision to focus almost exclusively on comedy can come as a breath of fresh air, even if not every joke lands.
To break his family’s perverted lineage, Akemitsu decides to become a monk, only to find himself living alongside a plethora of girls who inadvertently test his resolve. The premise is fairly similar to Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister, but TenPuru ramps up the humor a lot more, to mostly positive results. The anime feels like a throwback to shows from the early 2000s.

Girlfriend, Girlfriend is dumb, and that is not a criticism. The anime revolves almost entirely around relatively stupid characters, particularly the male protagonist. Despite already having a girlfriend, Naoya Mukai jumps head-first into a harem when another girl asks him out, simply because he wants to be true to his feelings and would rather date them both. Other female characters also gradually fall for Naoya, although he is willing to reject them if he is not interested.
Comedy harem anime are acquired tastes, and Girlfriend, Girlfriend is no exception. Honestly, some people might find most of the characters obnoxious rather than funny. However, if the show’s humor complements a viewer’s sensibilities, they will find one of the most comedy-heavy harems in anime. Saki is also one of the genre’s funniest female characters.
