James Gunn’s Superman movie releases in theaters this summer, but the DC Studios boss is simultaneously balancing multiple other DCU projects. Now, Gunn has offered insight into how he’s managing his duties and provided an update on his next DC project after Superman.
Superman is considered the ‘true start’ of the DC Universe (DCU) and will set the tone for the franchise. Of course, there are already multiple DCU projects in various stages of development, including Peacemaker season 2, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and more. As the DC Studios co-CEO, Gunn is involved in each of these projects, though Superman and a handful of Peacemaker season 2 episodes are the only ones with him serving as writer and director. However, Gunn is seemingly prepared to take on another DCU project.

What is James Gunn Working on Now?
On Threads, Gunn revealed that he is currently spending “a fair amount of time pre-writing” his next DC Studios project. Gunn has previously said he was choosing between 4 different “things” for his next DC project after Superman, and he has seemingly made his selection. However, he did not provide specific details on the unnamed project in question. Gunn’s update was prompted by a Threads user who asked how he’s balancing his work at DC Studios with Superman and Peacemaker season 2 in post-production. He shared that most of his time is spent working on Superman and Peacemaker, but he also watches the dailies and gives his ideas on other DCU projects. Despite the workload, Gunn noted that “it’s much less overwhelming than when I was directing.”

It’s uncertain whether Gunn will also direct this DC Studios project or if he’ll delegate the directorial responsibilities to another filmmaker. While Gunn’s scripts have been directed by someone else before (most notably the live-action Scooby-Doo movies and Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake), in the past two decades he’s helmed all but two of his screenplays (Brightburn and The Belko Experiment). So, handing over this DC Studios project to another filmmaker wouldn’t be unprecedented for Gunn but it would be out of the ordinary for him as of late.
Fans are already guessing what Gunn’s next DC project will be. While feature films like The Authority or TV shows like Waller or Booster Gold are potential candidates, some fans suspect Gunn’s next DC project would be more obvious: A Superman sequel or Creature Commandos season 2. While a second Superman movie hasn’t been announced, Creature Commandos was renewed for a second season in December 2024. Considering Gunn wrote all 7 episodes of the first season, it is reasonable to assume he’ll do the same for the second.
Of course, all of these DCU plans could unravel if Superman fails. Gunn has admitted that they’re not “just going to keep making movies” if Superman flops. A lot is riding on Superman, and while the response to the first trailer was mostly positive, it’s too soon to tell if that enthusiasm will translate into ticket sales.
Superman is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
