Warning: The following contains spoilers for Masamune-kun’s Revenge R Episode 6, “The Second Date”, now streaming on Crunchyroll.
Back in the review for Masamune-kun’s Revenge R episode 5, we talked about how we finally reached the resolution of the story. After all, based on Masamune’s own definition, a Japanese rom-com story reached about 80% of the story once the main protagonists confess their love.
Masamune confessed his love back in episode 4, and Aki accepted his feelings in episode 5. So the two of them have officially become a couple now. Which means we’ve passed the second act of the story, and now it’s time to enjoy a nice ride into the happy ever after ending. Or at least that’s how it should be.
Jump Straight Into The Rom-Com Tropes
As predicted in the review for the episode 5, episode 6 is the beginning of the end for Masamune-kun’s Revenge R. As such, things are expected to be rather smooth sailing and full of the usual fun and wholesome romantic journey of two teenagers who are in love with each other. And that is more or less what we got in episode 6. Because this episode marks the first time Aki and Masamune go on a date after they officially become a couple.
This is pretty much the point where this series finally jumps straight into the tried and true Japanese rom-com template. Because everything in this episode, particularly the dating portion of the story, follows the standard rom-com tropes to the letter. The overthinking boyfriend who tries his best to plan a perfect date only for everything to go wrong in the end. The tsundere girlfriend who pretends to stay calm on the outside while actually filled with happiness and expectation on the inside. And tons of funny and heartwarming moments happening to this new couple along the way.
So as you can see, it is a classic Japanese rom-com set up that you can see in tons of other stories in this genre. So if a heartwarming romance, cute moments, silly and random hilarious situations, and wholesome vibes is the kind of rom-coms that you like, then this is the perfect time to start watching Masamune-kun’s Revenge R.
Lack Of Communication Lead To Misunderstanding, Again
The whole story of Masamune-kun’s Revenge can be boiled down to one sentence, which is “misunderstanding breeds contempt”. After all, Masamune’s revenge plan that has driven the story thus far comes from a simple misunderstanding.
That misunderstanding comes from a lack of communication between the involved in the story, particularly between Aki and Masamune. Had the little Masamune went back to Aki’s place the day after he was rejected by her and properly conveyed his feelings and frustration, the misunderstanding would be cleared up and they wouldn’t have to bear a scar on their heart.
Similar thing happens in this episode. Aki tries to get Masamune to eat lots of sweets because the little Masamune in her memory liked to eat sweets. Unfortunately, the present Masamune has developed an aversion to sweets and high-calorie foods due to his traumatic experience of being rejected and insulted due to his chubby body. That simple instance during what should’ve been the best part of their date turns into a tiny rift between their hearts. So once again, a misunderstanding caused a new problem for this new couple.
A Bit More Teasing
As mentioned in the opening of this article, in a conventional Japanese rom-coms, the teasing happens during the second act of the story. After all, that is the part where we get to see the show runners teasing the audience about the possible relationship between the two main protagonists. This is the part where conflicts and obstacles appear in the story. And this is also the template that Masamune-kun’s Revenge has been following thus far.
However, since there are still quite a few episodes left in this third act, the story decided to diverge from the conventional template and try to do things a bit differently. As discussed in the previous section, there are some minor setbacks that appear right at the end of this episode. It shouldn’t develop into something major, because that kind of thing usually happens in the second act of a story. But it would certainly keep things interesting and quite intense as we head out to the finish line.
We will likely see some other disturbance as we get near the end of Masamune-kun’s Revenge R. After all, it’s clear that the show runners, or rather the original creator of Masamune-kun’s Revenge R, tries to do something different for the last part of the story. So expect to see the wholesome moments alongside some minor setbacks and obstacles as we get closer to the last episode.
